Abstract

In orthodox narratives, freedom of expression manifests as a reality that evolves through the weakening of the censorship mechanism. However, Faramerz Dabhoiwala describes the evolution of this manifestation as an artificial construct rather than a natural process. In this context, he deconstructs orthodox narratives to convey the historical experience of the concept to the reader. By tracing the genealogy of the concept of freedom of expression, the book highlights the structural and historical continuity between the strategies of early actors holding printing capital to manipulate the masses through the discourse of the "marketplace of ideas," and the rhetoric of unrestricted freedom of expression used by Silicon Valley-centered monopolies to establish global hegemony in today's information capitalism.
