GENDER-BASED ANALYSİS OF FEMALE CRİMİNALİTY İN TURKEY THROUGH JUDİCİAL STATİSTİCS

This article examines women’s involvement in crime in Turkey on the basis of official judicial statistics. The research draws upon data published by the General Directorate of Judicial Records and Statistics of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Turkey and analyses female defendants appearing before criminal courts in terms of offence categories and age groups. The study aims to identify the areas of crime in which women most frequently come into contact with the criminal justice system and to assess how this pattern has evolved over time.
The findings indicate that female defendants are concentrated in specific categories of offences, and that this concentration is not coincidental. The most prevalent categories involving women are offences against bodily integrity, honour, liberty, and property. Furthermore, the results reveal that the vast majority of female defendants are aged 18 and over, while children and adolescents constitute only a limited proportion of judicial statistics. By contrast, women are markedly underrepresented in structural crime categories such as offences against state security.
The study demonstrates that female criminality should not be regarded as an individual anomaly; rather, it is a phenomenon closely linked to everyday life, social relations, and broader structural conditions. In this respect, the research provides a contemporary, data-driven framework for understanding female criminality in Turkey.
